October 2nd: Who's really running the Boston Schools?
In this episode of New England Next Gen, Sarah Howard — a Boston college student and mom — takes a closer look at how Boston Public Schools are run and where the money really goes.
Did you know Boston is the only city in Massachusetts without an elected school board? Instead, every member is appointed by the mayor. That same year Boston stopped reporting teacher salaries in detail — and today, the district has one of the highest numbers of uncertified teachers in classrooms.
With a $1.58 billion school budget (over $33,000 per student), Boston is spending big. But how much of that actually reaches the classroom? Where is it really going — transportation, central offices, or directly to students?
Join Sarah as she breaks down the numbers, asks tough questions, and invites parents and students to share their own experiences. Because education isn’t just about policy — it’s about our kids, our families, and the next generation of leaders.
